This man is raking the cut field into rows so it may be baled. It is a lighter task than the actual cutting of the alfalfa so instead of the four horse teams we see two animals in use. If the ground were wet, for example, the farmer might still use four horses but they adjust the effort to the work needed. Keeps others fresh and rested.
